Pilot workshop on antiracist pedagogy for SLU’s teachers

Published: 22 September 2020

Friday, 11 September was the final meeting of a two-day pilot workshop on antiracist pedagogy for SLU’s teachers. The workshop was arranged by Educational Developers Linn Areskoug and Alexandra D’Urso from SLU’s Educational Development Unit, Division of Learning and Digitalisation.

There were several reasons why the pilot workshop was given. In 2016, the Swedish government released a National plan to combat racism, similar forms of hostility and hate crime; this plan contains several tasks for different government agencies. As a government agency, SLU has a responsibility to work with this plan in relation to other regulations concerning teaching in higher education. Additionally, the EPU has received requests from SLU teachers to learn more about how to teach in more inclusive ways where antiracist perspectives are addressed in the context of teaching.

Respect for human rights is included in our work as state employees, but it is not always clear how different regulations can be applied in our daily work. That is why it is of great importance for teachers and researchers at SLU to both be informed about the national plan and to have the opportunity to reflect over how the plan can be applied in teaching in higher education. After an internal evaluation, the workshop will be given in a more extensive format as a one-week higher education pedagogy course during the spring of 2021.

For SLU employees who would like to know more about how work against racism can look like in different government agencies, more information can be found at the Living History Forums’s Web site. Part of this work includes the existence of an open national network against racism, hostility, and hate crimes for staff at Swedish government agencies.
