An Ethiopian delegation representing the Ministry for Environment, Forests and Climate, The Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute (EEFRI), Unitied Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Sida will spend time at SLU during the upcoming week. A week of dialogue will be held at SLU in Uppsala and Skinnskatteberg 5-9 February. This will be the third week with forest sector actors from the two countries gathering in less than a year.
Ethiopia has a new Ministry for Environment, Forests and Climate. The overall vision of the recent ten-year National Forest Sector Development Program (NFSDP) aims at transforming Ethiopia’s forest sector in a way that increases its contribution to the GDP, generate employment and enhance quality and quantity of environmental services. Forest and landscape restoration will play a key role to increase sustainable forest management as a driver for restoring environmental services and enhancing green growth for rural outcomes.
Sida, trough UNDP in Ethiopia, is supporting the ministry and related institutes; higher education as well as regional and local management and extension to develop and launch the NFSDP. As part of this support, SLU Global has the task to carry out and coordinate a dialogue between the Ethiopian actors around the ministry and actors in the Swedish forest sector. This started on a full week in May 2017 when an Ethiopian delegation led by HE. Dr. Gemedo Dalle Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change and HE. Ato Kebede Yimam State Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change studied the Swedish forest sector and visited many actors. Later on, in December 2017, a Swedish delegation from SLU, Swedish Forest Agency and SCC Forestry similarly visited Ethiopia. Again with the attention and full participation of the State Minister. This time to discuss and give advice on how to enhance enabling institutional environments for the desired development, as general advice and as input to an Ethiopian program proposal to Sida and other donors to support the NFSDP.
During the next week, four Ethiopians representing representing the Ministry for Environment, Forests and Climate, The Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute (EEFRI), Unitied Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Sida will spend time at SLU. This time to further discuss the support program proposal; specifically around biodiversity, water, soils, gender, sector information management, value chain development, training of trainers and pilot case studies.
