Half a million SEK to SCAW to investigate how Swedish Animal Welfare regulations have changed over the years

Published: 20 September 2017

Swedish Centre for Animal Welfare, SCAW, has been granted SEK 500,000 to investigate if the changes of the animal welfare regulations have been beneficial for animals.

The project aims to study the changes made in the national animal welfare regulations since the Swedish Animal Welfare Act was introduced in 1988 and compare this to the corresponding changes made in the EU- and Norwegian regulations during the same period.

The project is expected to give answers to whether the changes have been based on scientific evidence and if the general requirements for simplification of the regulations have resulted in any actual changes concerning the welfare of the animals. Furthermore, the project will display the relationship between the interests of the stakeholders and the animal welfare priorities.

The project will also evaluate whether the implementation of the regulatory changes have been beneficial for the welfare of different species of animals.

The project will last for one year and result in a report to the government and its authorities.
