Award to Chuanxin Sun from society for plant physiology

Published: 03 April 2017

SLU researcher Chuanxin Sun has recently received the "Physiologia Plantarum Award", by the Scandinavian Society for Plant Physiology (Societas Physiologiae Plantarum Scandinavica). Chuanxin Sun's research has resulted in a climate-friendly rice that nearly eliminates the production of the greenhouse gas methane during cultivation.

The Physiologia Plantarum Award is granted to a scientist that has made outstanding contributions to plant science in the areas that are covered by the society's journal Physiologia Plantarum. The SPPS Council has decided to give the Physiologia Plantarum Award 2017 to Dr Chuanxin Sun, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden, in recognition of his recent ground-breaking work on low-methane rice.

Chuanxin Sun will receive the honour, a monetary reward, and a certificate during the SPPS Congress in Naantali, Finland this summer.

The new kind of rice, which emits much less methane than normal rice, and also increases the yield of rice plants to produce more food, was presented in the journal Nature in 2015 by an international team of researchers led by Chuanxin Sun. The rice attracted much attention in media around the world, and was named one of the most important innovations in 2015 by the American magazine Popular Science.

Chuanxin Sun is an associate professor at SLU's Department of Plant Biology in Uppsala.
