This year’s climate fund projects announced

Published: 20 November 2017

Seven projects have been granted funds from the SLU climate fund for 2017:

  • Purchase of a plastic shredder (Christian Demandt, Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Ultuna).
Justification: At a relatively low cost, reduces local carbon dioxide emissions and strengthens the SLU brand externally and in regard to the students.

  • Purchase of an electric ATV (all-terrain vehicle) (Elinora Johansson, Department of Clinical Sciences, Ultuna).
Justification: This vehicle reduces carbon dioxide emissions considerably for every krona, is cost efficient and benefits everyone. It also strengthens the SLU brand in regard to the students.

  • Purchase and installation of video conference equipment at the Department of Animal Environment and Health and the Department of Soil and Environment, Skara (Anders H Karlsson through Karin Wallin, Skara).
Justification: A well-defined project that will involve a great reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. In the long run, this will save travel costs and travel time.

  • Installation of solar panels on two test surfaces in the inland of Västerbotten (Linnea Hansson, Department of Soil and Environment, Ultuna).
Justification: This initiative involves high carbon dioxide savings at a low cost. The project gives a clear signal that you can do a lot with a small amount of money.

  • Converting a double garage to a bicycle garage (Johanna Wallsten, Faculty of Forest Sciences/Umeå environmental certificate).
Justification: A project that promotes the environment as well as health, will affect a lot of people and contribute to a relatively large reduction of carbon dioxide. It also strengthens the SLU brand at the site.

  • Investing in an electric car (Johan Karlsson, Department of Animal Nutrition and Management, Ultuna).
Justification: The car reduces carbon dioxide emissions and will be used – and seen– between Ultuna and the Swedish Livestock Research Centre. The project will, to a large extent, strengthen the SLU brand internally, externally and in regard to the students.

  • Construction of a tank in the aquatic laboratory (Markus Langeland, Department of Animal Nutrition and Management, Ultuna).
Justification: This project features both science and research, as well as a considerable reduction of water use while also saving money. The innovative project may strengthen the SLU brand externally and in regard to the students.

The remaining funds will go to standardisation of AV support.
The remaining funds will partly finance AV support standardisation (see SLU ID: ua 2017.1.1.1-2293). The amount is just over SEK one million.

The climate fund has a test period of three years, and in January 2018 these three years are up. During the spring semester 2018, the fund will be evaluated to see if it will continue to run. However, more funds will be granted during autumn 2018.
