Magdalena Bieroza talked about macronutrient interactions at the Royal Society in London

Published: 20 June 2016

Dr Magdalena Bieroza from the Department of Soil and Environment was an invited speaker at the Macronutrient Cycles meeting held at the Royal Society in London (15-16th June 2016).

She presented a paper on macronutrient interactions in groundwater-fed streams with a focus on diffuse pollution controls for phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and carbon (C). The presentation summarized her work in groundwater-fed catchments in the UK (River Thames and Rive Eden) and highlighted the importance of subsurface flow pathways in delivery of soluble fractions of C, N and P to surface waters.

The conference summarized the findings of the 6 year Macronutrient Cycles Programme founded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in the UK. The overall goal of the programme was to quantify the scales (magnitude and spatial/temporal variation) of N and P fluxes and nature of transformations through the catchment under a changing climate and perturbed C cycle. NERC has allocated over £9.5m to this programme.

The final meeting brought together over 100 scientists and stakeholders interested in monitoring, modelling and management of C, N, P cycles in terrestrial and aquatic systems.
