Laxmi Mishra

Laxmi Mishra
I'm a postdoctoral researcher in plant molecular biology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), currently working as a visiting postdoc in Steven Penfield’s group at the John Innes Centre (JIC), UK. I hold a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Umeå University and have over 15 years of research experience across Sweden, the UK, India, and the USA. My work focuses on gene regulation, reproductive development, and plant stress responses, with research spanning model and crop species such as Arabidopsis, conifers, and Brassicas. I currently hold an international postdoctoral fellowship from the Swedish Research Council (VR). Alongside research, I’m actively involved in teaching and student supervision, and I enjoy collaborating across disciplines to better understand how plants grow and adapt to changing environments.

Research

I am currently working on two major projects:

SLU and JIC:

Project 1: Temperature Effects on Reproductive Development in Brassica Crops
This project examines the impact of temperature fluctuations during early floral development on fertility and gene expression in Brassica oleracea. Using laser capture microdissection and ultra-low-input transcriptomics, we focus on chromosomal gene clusters—groups of co-expressed genes that play crucial roles in plant development and stress response. The project aims to uncover how these clusters are regulated, how they respond to heat stress, and how they have evolved across Brassicaceae species. Ultimately, the research supports the development of climate-resilient crops by identifying genetic mechanisms that influence yield under rising temperatures.

SLU:

Project 2: The Early Cone-Setting Project (ECONE): This project focuses on improving the efficiency of conifer breeding programs by promoting early cone-setting. It includes field trials at Nassaj to study natural variation in cone development, alongside investigations into gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis and catabolism pathways. These studies aim to accelerate breeding cycles and enhance productivity in conifer species, supporting sustainable forestry practices.
