Hjalmar Laudon
Presentation
I have been professor and chair of forest landscape biogeochemistry at SLU Umeå since 2008. Since 2002 I have been the scientific director for the Krycklan Catchment Study (www.slu.se/Krycklan). I have led several large research programs focused on process-based understanding of natural and human-induced changes in surface waters in boreal ecosystems. I have among many things been on the board of National Research Infrastructure (RFI) at the Swedish Research Council (VR) and an expert evaluator for the European Research Council (ERC) advanced grants. I am also head of the department of Forest Ecology and management, which I have been since 2016.
Since 2024 I am a Wallenberg Scholar (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en) for my work with water in the boreal forest landscape
Teaching
I participate in teaching many courses at the BSc and MSc levels, but I am also responsible for the recurring PhD student course Watershed Ecology and Biogeochemistry, which is open to research students from all over the world. The next occasion to participate will be in September 2024.
Research
My research is primarily focused on how natural and human-induced processes affect water availability, recharge, runoff processes and water quality at a landscape scale. I work primarily with processed-based research questions in the boreal region, but also with many environmentally relevant questions on how to best manage and protect our waters from human intervention. I have to date co-authored over 350 peer-reviewed papers.
