Supervision seminar - Fieldwork is not just data gathering. How to support PhD students

The Educational Development Unit welcomes doctoral supervisors to our supervision seminars.

Fieldwork is a reality and a requirement in many disciplines across the natural and social sciences. While the goal of fieldwork is primarily data collection, being able to anticipate and navigate unexpected logistical and technical issues, foster positive personal relationships with people on site, research assistants and local authorities and respect local culture, can make or break one´s PhD project. This seminar will provide guidance to supervisors on how they can prepare and support their doctoral students through the joys and perils of fieldwork.

Martina Angela Caretta is senior lecturer, Department of Human geography, Lund University. Martina has published on doctoral research, mentoring and field studies.
