About the seminar

Combating eutrophication requires holistic mitigation measures aimed at reducing anthropogenic losses of nutrients, including nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) to aquatic ecosystems. Two-stage ditches are aimed at countering these challenges by relying on hydrological and biogeochemical controls to reduce the export of N, P and other pollutants from agricultural headwaters.

At the seminar, Lukas will present the capacity for N removal and nitrous oxide emissions from sediments in 10 Swedish two-stage ditches. He will then show how different catchment characteristics and design of these systems influence denitrification. Lukas will finish the seminar with an outlook on his ongoing water quality monitoring and upcoming research.
