Superfika: "Not just bullshit: Challenges to model manure trade in the European Union to comply with the Nitrate Directive"

Abstract:

The Nitrate Directive limits the amount of manure that can be applied per unit of agricultural land. In regions with intense animal husbandry based on traded feeding stuffs, the regulation can force farmers to export manure to other regions. In the light of future tightening of regulations, it becomes increasingly urgent to include inter-regional trade with manure in our policy analyses. In this presentation I present our ongoing work to extend the CAPRI model with a manure trade component, and some challenges encountered along the way.
