World Environment Day 2020

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) takes pleasure in extending an invitation to the Permanent Representatives to FAO to participate in the World Environment Day 2020 event “Time for Nature: Animal, Humans and Environment interface”.

Virtual meeting (Zoom), Friday, 5 June 2020 (13.30-15.30 hours)

The event, hosted by FAO, with the participation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), will be held virtually (through the zoom platform) on Friday, 5 June 2020 from 13.30 to 15.30 hours.

FAO recognizes the important role of ecosystem restoration for improving resilience in a changing climate and re‐establishing an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and humans. Ecosystem Restoration for production must be at the center of efforts to build back. FAO is, therefore, proud to be co-leading the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030. Within this context, FAO wishes to commemorate World Environment Day 2020 by highlighting what the Organization is doing to help transform our food and agricultural systems after COVID-19.

The virtual event on World Environment Day 2020 aims to deepen discussion on the links between biodiversity, health and diseases transmission; food production and biodiversity management - trade-offs to reduce emerging infectious diseases; and ecosystem-based approaches to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. These three topics will be elaborated on by three Panels, with a particular focus on sharing FAO’s experiences in these areas.
