Researchers and PhD students from all over Sweden can participate in the national heat, which is coordinated by the association Public and Science (Vetenskap och Allmänhet).
To apply, you must submit a video in which you talk about your research. Public and Science will then select the participants. Maybe it will be you!
If you are selected, you will receive coaching in presentation techniques and help with your performance. Whether you win or not, the experience will be invaluable for the rest of your life.
Accommodation and travel expenses to Uppsala will be covered, making this an attractive opportunity for all SLU locations. Presentations can be given in Swedish or English.
"It would be fantastic to have researchers from Uppsala in the competition. We know there are many researchers who are excellent at explaining what they do," says Katarina Holmborn Garpenstrand, project leader of SciFest.
The competition takes place on the SciFest stage in front of high school classes and a jury.
Daniel Martey Junior Mensah from the Department of Forest Resource Management at SLU won third place in last year's national final. He used the metaphor of "innebandy" to explain his research — how Team Forest (forest companies, nature conservation, and the public who enjoy walking, berry picking, etc.) can unite against Team Threat (fires, floods, harmful insects, and high temperatures). He encourages anyone interested in science communication to apply.
"I learnt to tailor my research to the audience, which included people outside my line of work and high scholars. Having only 4 minutes to explain my research, meant that I needed to ensure that every word was important. It is a great opportunity to share one’s research with the public. This competition can help to attract new collaborators, students," says Daniel.
But the Researcher Grand Prix is just one of many exciting activities taking place at SciFest, which runs from 9-11 October. Here, you have the chance to share your research with children, teenagers, and the general public.
Apply from 13 May to 30 June.
