Seeing the Unseen: The Value of Water

Published: 29 August 2022

World Water Week 2022 is taking place in Stockholm, 23 August - 1 September on the theme Seeing the Unseen: The Value of Water. Researchers from SLU are contributing to the conference with their knowledge on the importance of water security to safe food and nutrition.

Water is essential for all life on earth, not least for food and nutrition security. Nutritious food is a basic human need, but still billions of people worldwide are suffering from malnutrition and hunger. Food security and water security are both parts of the UN Global Goals and Agenda 2030.

The current global water systems for food production are under increasingly excessive pressures due to population growth, Covid-19, economic downturn, and climate change. The climate crisis is first and foremost also a water crisis. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including floods and droughts, have highlighted food security vulnerabilities in rainfed agriculture, which constitutes 80% of the world’s productive land. The need for climate-resilient water and food system transformations is urgent. - World water week
