"Sweden central in fighting antibiotic threats"

Published: 01 November 2018

Sweden has a unique opportunity and an obligation to spread knowledge about how to keep animals for food produce healthy and productive with little use of antibiotics, writes Professor Ulf Magnusson, SLU in a debate article in Svenska Dagbladet.

"Antimicrobial resistance is spread across the world just like other infections: via our travels and through trade with food or living animals. So besides the risk of spreading resistant bacteria between animals and humans, there is the spread of resistant bacteria between different parts of the world. This is often forgotten in the internal Swedish debate" , Magnusson writes, among other things.

"Sweden has a unique opportunity and an obligation to spread knowledge about how to keep animals for food produce healthy and productive with little use of antibiotics. Using this skill makes a significant contribution to reducing the global threat from resistant bacteria. In low-income countries, income also increases for the millions of poor farmers who keep animals and allows more of the world's nearly 200 million malnourished children to access high-quality animal food.
