Two SLU projects receive funding from special call for projects on farm animals

Two research groups from SLU have received funding from the Swedish farmers' foundation for agricultural research (Stiftelsen Lantbruksforskning) for new projects that will contribute to more sustainable cattle farming and increased animal welfare. One project aims to develop a method to detect joint problems in breeding bulls. In the second project, the researchers will examine how  grooves in the floor affect the bovine's risk of slipping.

The board of Stiftelsen Lantbruksforskning has decided to grant two project requests for funding in this winter's special call for projects on farm animals. The aim of the call is to directly apply research findings practically to prevent mechanical damage. The researchers will share the sum of SEK 1.4 million.

The funded projects

  • S-17-20-786: 'New ultrasonic method for the evaluation of knee joints in cattle with focus on beef bulls'. Main applicant is Kerstin Hanson, SLU. The project was granted SEK 700,000.
  • S-17-20-784: 'Non-slip floors prevent cattle injuries: does grooving reduce the risk of slipping on concrete floors?'. Main applicant is Christer Bergsten, SLU. The project was granted SEK 700,000.

Facts:

The special call regarding farm animals include SEK 1.4 million and is funded by Agria. In addition to finance this year's special call Agria allocates 4 per mille of the premium income from the agricultural area to research via the Foundation for Agricultural Research.
