Rational use of genetic resources for resistance breeding and durable resistance in cereals

A photo of a building.

Welcome to a hybrid seminar on the rational use of genetic resources for resistance breeding and durable resistance in cereals. There will be two parts and two discussions, one is Swedish (at 9:00) and one in English (at 10:45).

The need to reduce the dependence of cereals on chemical pesticides is a global concern. In light of the recent cereal disease epidemics (Stem rust UG99, Wheat blast, Triticale mildew), and the global wheat and energy crisis, farmers in industrialized countries are under strong incentives to use more inputs to secure production, while in developing countries costs for such inputs have become unbearable. In Europe, the EU green deal is imposing important challenges to the cereal sector in the European market in general (including Sweden), one of which is the ambitious objective to reduce by 50% the use of pesticide by 2030.

The goal of this seminar is to discuss the role and expectations from different stakeholders about the contribution of resistant varieties and resistance breeding to reaching this objective, and provide a realistic perspective on what strategies are the most effective.

We look very much forward to welcoming you!

Programme

There will be two parts and two discussions, one is Swedish (at 9:00) and one in English (at 10:45) as follows:

9:00 – 9:15
Welcome Fika

9:15 – 9:30
Introduction (who we are – what we do) and objectives of the seminar.

9:30 Part 1: In Swedish, led by Björn Andersson

9:30 - 10:00 Hantering av växtsjukdomar i svenskt jordbruk: aktuella utmaningar för att möta EU:s gröna giv

Björn Andersson

Suggested lines of discussion

  • To what extent we can short down fungicide use in particular for complicated cereal diseases in Sweden such as Septoria tritici blotch (STB), and Fusarium head blight (FHB).
  • To what extent we are prepared with varieties adapted to Swedish conditions when there is a rapid change in the disease landscape with the example of DTR taking over STB.
  • To what extent we can use cultivar mixtures in Sweden considering this requires the availability of a rich catalogue of both highly-performing, and well-adapted cultivars with good resistance for farmers to choose from to design mixes.

10:00 - 10:30
Discussion and input from Stakeholders

10:30 - 10:45
Coffee break

10:45 Part 2
In English, led by Salim Bourras – 1 hour

10:45 - 11:15: A realistic perspective on the challenges and opportunities for cereal resistance breeding and the rational use of genetic resources

Salim Bourras

Suggested lines of discussion

  • The genetic validity and breedability of generic traits such ‘durable resistance’, ‘multiple pathogen resistance’ and ‘positive interactions with beneficial microbes’ and what it takes to actually bring these traits to the field.
  • What strategies can be used to increase the durability of resistance in the field based ‘game changing’ new knowledge and the rational use of the cereal genetic resources.
  • A critical assessment of what technologies are truly helpful and relevant considering the profusion of all sorts of ‘omics’ and ‘big data’ which can be sometimes confusing.

11:15 - 11:45
Discussion on cereal resistance breeding

11:45 - 12:00
Conclusions and closure

12:00
Get-together lunch at SLU.
