The Nordic countries have a long tradition of working with gender issues, a well-developed welfare society with extensive childcare, and a large proportion of women part of the labour market.
Although the Nordic countries are relatively good at gender equality, there are still large differences in gender equality within universities and research indicate a number of obstacles to women's academic careers (Etzkowitz and Ranga 2011).
This lecture will discuss what we know about existing gender equality problems in academia, and the policies that exist at local and national level to address under-representation. In addition, approaches to achieving gender equality in the academia like goal-oriented management and gender mainstreaming will be problematized.
