Hire a photographer or media producer

Last changed: 07 October 2025

We need high-quality images when communicating about our activities, but we can’t always produce them ourselves. If you need to hire a professional photographer, there are several considerations to make, as well as legal requirements you must follow.

When using external image suppliers, it is essential to have a written agreement that clearly defines the right to use the material — including where it may be used, in which media, to what extent, and for how long.

To ensure that image material can be used freely in all SLU-wide communication and channels, it should be purchased with full and unlimited usage rights. If such unrestricted use is not agreed upon from the start, additional costs will be incurred each time the material is used in a new context or channel, which can quickly become both complicated and expensive.

Hiring a media producer

Depending on your target audience, the nature of the production, your budget, and how the film will be used, you can turn either to one of our internal media production units or to our contracted communication agencies.
SLU has extensive in-house expertise in live streaming events, video production, animation, podcast recording, music production, and more.

You can also contact our contracted communication agencies contracted communication agencies for film production services under SLU’s framework agreement.

Filming or taking photos with drones is considered camera surveillance and is regulated by the Camera Surveillance Act. To film with a drone, you must have a permit from the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY). For more information and application forms, see IMY’s website on the Camera Surveillance Act.

To ensure that everyone who appears in photos or videos has given consent, you must also inform people on campus when filming will take place — for example, through temporary signs and email notices.

No photography services from the Division of Communication

The Division of Communication cannot offer photography services to other parts of the university and must refer to external photographers or provide guidance on how to take simple photos yourself.

Photography by the Division of Communication still takes place when needed, but only when there is a prioritised need for images for the university’s central communication, internal or external. You are always welcome to contact the photo editor for advice and help with your image-related questions.
