Fish and wildlife students awarded

Anna Widén and Sam Shry, former students at the Master's program Managment of Fish and Wildlife Populations, have received Arvid Lindman's prize for their theses.

Arvid Lindman's prize is awarded annually by the Faculty of Forest Sciences at SLU for a meritorious master thesis. In addition to honors and diplomas, the prize money is SEK 10,000.

Anna Widén's thesis project Influencing factors on red bark stripping on spruce: plant diversity, crop intake and temperature are priced with the following motivation:

"Widén has with a high level of independence performed her thesis work focusing on factors that impact bark stripping by red deer on spruce. She showed a high capacity to perform all the parts of a high quality scientific report. Experimental design, field work, literature review and scientific writing was performed with high level of precision and Widén showed that she I capable of solving an advanced assignment."

- It feels incredibly fun! I had no idea that the price existed so it really came as a surprise, it really is a great honor to take part of the price! I am very happy and grateful! says Anna Widén, current PhD student at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies at SLU in Umeå.

Anna describes the thesis project as fun and rewarding with many different parts where she participated from beginning to end.

- The project has given me a lot of experience that I can use in my current position as a PhD student. I got the chance to work in an incredibly great project group with very supportive supervisors! It feels like I share the price with them.

Knowledge that makes good use

Sam Shry's master thesis Effects of Body Conditioning on Optional Anadromy in Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) is priced with the following motivation:

"Shry has performed a thesis work that in all parts is characterized by high quality. Everything including experimental design, data analyses and scientific writing holds high quality. This is further strengthened by the fact that results from the thesis is now prepared for scientific publication. In addition, Shry showed an excellent capacity to present and communicate his results at the oral seminar."

Sam is unaware of the price when we call to congratulate.

- I'm very happy and excited, thank you so much! I'm overwhelmed! It was really a fantastic project to work with. The Master's programme was super, and all I learned then I now use in my current job as a fisheries management officer in the county administrative board.
