The Swedish National Committee for Geophysics has awarded the Rossby Prize 2017 to Kevin Bishop for "outstanding interdisciplinary work and commitment to the sustainable use of natural resources". Bishop is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for environmental monitoring and assessment at SLU as well as professor at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment.

The Rossby prize is awarded in honour of Professor Carl-Gustaf Rossby, for significant scientific contributions related to Nordic geophysics. The prize is awarded by the Swedish National Committee for Geophysics, administered by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA). The prize is usually awarded every third year and Kevin Bishop is the 17th laureate since 1966.

The statement reads:

"The Swedish National Committee for Geophysics (SNG) awards the Rossby prize 2017 to Kevin Bishop, Professor at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, SLU, for his significant contributions in environmental research and for his commitment to the sustainable use of natural resources. Bishop has in a commendable way made considerable contributions to a deeper understanding of hydrological pathways, acidification processes, carbon transport in soil, water and the atmosphere, as well as of the mercury cycle in the environment. He has successfully integrated different research areas, and, through his international commitment, Bishop is an ambassador for Nordic geophysics."

The prize ceremony takes place at an open geoscience symposium including a prize lecture on November 8 2017 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
