Curious about SLU’s environmental monitoring and assessment - lunch lectures in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala

internal events | meetings | seminars, workshops |

This year marks the 25 year anniversary of SLU’s commission from the government to carry out environmental monitoring and assessment, EMA. We will celebrate this by having lunch lectures in Alnarp on November 9, in Umeå on November 10, and in Uppsala on November 11. In Umeå, the lunch lecture will be broadcasted live.

Join in and get ideas for new collaborations and discover the treasures of EMA. We invite all staff and students at SLU - both those of you who are curious to learn more about EMA, and you who already work with EMA. The outline for the events is the same on all three campuses, but the persons giving lectures differ. The program for the events includes a short introduction to EMA on SLU followed by a presentation on how EMA have contributed to sustainability and improved environmental status, and rounded off with information on how to find open EMA data.

The presentations will be in English and are scheduled for between 12.15pm and 1pm. There will be time for questions, and after the lectures there will be an opportunity to mingle and discuss with the lecturers.

We offer vegetarian soup, bread and something sweet on a first-come-first -serves basis. The soup is served from 12.00.

Welcome!

Program Alnarp November 9

Where: Loftet, Alnarpsgården

12.15 Introduction to Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

Lecturer: vice dean Håkan Schroeder at the LTV-faculty.

12.25 How can environmental monitoring data be used to describe todays and future forests?

Lecturer: researcher Torgny Lind at the Department of Forest Resource Management.

The presentation will focus on how environmental data describing the forest, mainly from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, (NFI), is used in different ways to increase knowledge about current and future state of the forest. Examples of use based on NFI data will be presented. Included is also a short presentation of results from a project simulating urban forest development with different management strategies in Sundsvall.

12.45 Open environmental monitoring and assessment data at SLU.

Lecturer: Kerstin Belin at the SLU University Library/Data Management Support

Program Umeå november 10

Where: The Library, SLU's campus Umeå and live at play.slu.se.

12.15 Introduction to Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

Lecturer: vice dean Pernilla Christensen at the S-faculty.

12.25 Assessment tools for the Water Framework Directive.

Lecturer: researcher Stina Drakare at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment.

During this presentation I will give some examples of how data from SLU’s environmental monitoring have been used in developing indicators and assessment tools for European freshwater systems. Monitoring data of biota and physicochemical variables from lakes and streams were used in a large European project during eight years to intercalibrate and harmonize assessment tools for the EU’s Water Framework Directive. SLU were heavily involved in this project, and needs of common metrics were identified. The project also became good opportunity to study how aquatic organisms are influenced by anthropogenic pressures over large gradients and over country borders which resulted in new robust assessment methods.

12.45 Open environmental monitoring and assessment data at SLU.

Lecturer: Mikaela Asplund at the SLU University Library/Data Management Support.

Program Uppsala november 11

Where: The Library, SLU's campus Uppsala

12.15 Introduction to Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.

Lecturer: vice dean Jens Olsson at the NJ-faculty and vice dean Johan Dicksved at the VH-faculty.

12.25 Pesticide monitoring provides incentives for regulations and collaborations.

Lecturer: coordinator Mikaela Gönczi at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment.

In the presentation some examples will be given on how Swedish pesticide monitoring data has been used as a basis for decisions taken at different levels in society. Monitoring data provides a “reality check” and is of high importance to motivate the need of new regulations and to show the effects of measures taken.

12.50 Open environmental monitoring and assessment data at SLU.

Lecturer: Simon Hallstan at the SLU University Library/Data Management Support.
