SLU's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment programme Acidification announces development aid

Published: 12 January 2021

SLU:s Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (FOMA) Acidification is announcing the call for development projects with an application deadline of 12 February 2021.

Dear colleagues! With an interest in Sweden’s environmental goal Only Natural Acidification we are announcing the call for acidification projects for 2021.

The major stakeholders for the SLU’s FOMA Acidificaition Program, (Naturvårdsverket, HaV, Skogsstyrelsen, Energimyndigheten, SGU, Vattenmyndigheterna och Skogsindustrierna) have provided an overview of their major priorities and questions related to acidification. Since these stakeholders will provide feedback on all applications, and SLU’s FOMA programs seeks to be of relevance to these stakeholders, it is advisable that proposed projects are of relevance to one or more of the stakeholders current areas of interest:

  1. How are acid deposition and land use, especially forestry and drainage of sulphide containing soils, currently affecting (spatially and temporally) the acid status of soils, soil water, groundwater and surface water and how might status change with climate change?
  2. How should we assess acidification pressure and is it possible to reach the national environmental objective “Only natural acidification”?
  3. Which geographical areas are mostly affected by acidification and how can we counteract or mitigate impacts cost effectively?

The budget should not exceed 250 000 SEK, and projects that will extend over several years are welcome, although funds can only be granted one year at a time. The budget for 2021 is in total 500 000 SEK, which means that it will be possible to finance 2-3 projects in 2021. In December 2021, preliminary reporting of the project should be performed using the SLU reporting system. Final reporting should include as a popular science version. Scientific publication is encouraged but is not financed by the project budget.
