Eight student theses about lakes, watercourses, seas and aquatic resources in 2018

SLU Aqua continuously supervises and examines students who do independent projects (thesis work) at the basic level and the advanced level. This year, 8 students have had their theses approved at the advanced level. The theses cover, among other things, gear development, climate change, fish diet compositions, ecosystem services, foodweb interactions, the appearance (morphology) of fish otoliths (ear stones), fish habitats, and methods for fish monitoring.

The basic education of SLU Aqua is an important, but comparatively minor, part of our activity. We offer several courses, for instance courses for independent projects, which include the production of a thesis which treats one or several research questions on lakes, watercourses, seas, or aquatic resources.

The student theses from 2018 have the following titles:
 
“Shedding light on alternative shrimp fishing: development of shrimp pots with a focus on selection, attraction and behaviour”
 
“Effects of global warming on Eurasian perch (Perca

“Diet overlap between cod (Gadus morhua) and European flounder (Platichthys flesus) in the central Baltic Sea”.
 
“Assessment of freshwater ecosystem services with a case study in river Arbogaån”.
 
“Causes of trends in abundance of mesopredators in the Kattegat Sea”.
 
”Otolith morphology of sprat along the Swedish west coast”.
 
“Defining habitat demands of Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) in a Swedish lake: a look into muddy waters”.
 
“Sampling methods of the wels catfish (Silurus glanis) in freshwater lakes: management of a vulnerable species”.
