Ny Teknik takes note of SLU innovation

Published: 06 September 2017

'Bundles' that can be left in the body after surgery - this is the result of SLU research. Recently, the innovation was demonstrated at a surgeons' meeting in Jönköping by the innovator himself, veterinary surgeon Odd Höglund.

Ten years ago, Odd Höglund, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Clinical Sciences, started to develop what has become the product Ligatie, a self-locking band that is now being tested as an alternative to surgical thread or surgical stapler.

Together with Niklas Borg, who specialises in polymer chemistry, he runs the company Resorbable Devices and aims to launch the product on the market, perhaps within a year.

The result of a pilot test using the implant to seal lung tissue indicates that the method could potentially be further developed. Odd Höglund presented the trial at the surgeons' meeting 'Kirurgveckan' in Jönköping, organised by the Swedish Society for Innovative Surgical Technology.

The paper Ny Teknik noticed this and published an article on this new innovation (article in Swedish only).
