Lise Pinaqui

Lise Pinaqui
PhD student at the Department of Animal Biosciences, studying leg health in organic pig production.

Presentation

I developed a strong interest early in life for animals and I was naturally attracted by animal science and welfare during my studies at the Institut Agro Montpellier, in France. My academic career brought me to SLU on an exchange to take courses from the Animal Science M.Sc. program. I had then the opportunity to work within a project on positive welfare in cattle, from which I wrote my M.Sc. thesis, aiming to validate the use of new positive welfare indicators to classify the welfare of dairy cattle on farm.

Research

My PhD project aims to improve leg health in Swedish organic pig production. Previous studies have shown that organically raised pigs have a higher risk of showing joint disorders at slaughter than conventional pigs, despite using the same breeds, but it is not known today how common and severe these issues are in Sweden. The project focuses on determining the prevalence of leg health issues among organically raised pigs of different genetic material, and improve and develop methods to adequately assess the leg health of live pigs over time. We also want to investigate if modifications of the pen environment during the early rearing phase improve leg health.
