SciFest is organised by SLU and Uppsala University and takes place from 8 to 10 October. The first two days are reserved for school groups, while Saturday is open to everyone. For visitors, SciFest is free.
The science festival centres on interactive activities where visitors can conduct experiments, try being a researcher, play games, take part in competitions and much more. They can experience science with all their senses! Most importantly, they have the opportunity to meet real researchers, ask questions and discuss exciting topics.
Research communication that works
SciFest is a form of science communication where you receive immediate confirmation that your message has got through.
“Children make their feelings very clear. You can see immediately when they discover something and react with, ‘Wow, that’s amazing!’ It’s great fun,” says Anna Lundmark, communications officer for SciFest and coordinator of SLU’s participation.
A major contribution from SLU
SLU is offering around 20 workshops and drop-in activities, and SLU researchers will also appear on stage. Among other things, visitors will be able to explore the secret lives of butterflies, create art using microbial colours, experience life as a farmer in Tanzania and help researchers decide what can be eaten.
“There will also be a great many exciting activities from Uppsala University. Together, we are creating an incredibly broad programme. For example, I’m looking forward to seeing what the archaeologists have found in the Carolina park.”
Many SLU students will also take part as event assistants. SciFest would not be possible without them.
Sparking curiosity
SciFest aims to spark curiosity and interest in research among children and young people. Hopefully, we will meet some of them again as students in the future!
“But right now, the most important goal is for everyone – visitors, exhibitors and student assistants alike – to enjoy three wonderful days at SciFest. See you there,” says Anna Lundmark.
SciFest usually attracts a total of around 7,000–8,000 visitors over the three days.
