Canvas is reopening

Published: 08 May 2026

Canvas is reopening.

UPDATE MAY 12 2026:

The vice-chancellor has decided to reopen Canvas in stages, starting on 12 May. We expect all logins to work as of 13 May.

Only Canvas is reopening at this stage. Connections to other systems will be restored gradually.

Published May 11 2026:

SLU’s vice-chancellor has decided to keep Canvas closed until 12 noon on Monday 18 May. The decision is to be reviewed on a daily basis. We are doing everything we can to minimise security risks while we wait for more detailed information from the provider, so that Canvas can be reopened safely.

Higher education institutions in Sweden are making their own assessments based on their individual circumstances. Our priority at SLU is to ensure that the system can reopen safely.

Published May 8 2026:
The shutdown will remain in effect until Monday, 11 May at 12:00 noon. A new decision will be made thereafter. The University Administration is working intensively to manage the incident and ensure continuity of operations during this period.

Information about the incident is being updated continuously on the staff web and the student web.

Facts:

Why have you made this decision?

We made this decision for security reasons.

How has SLU been affected?

It has been confirmed that personal data linked to SLU’s Canvas users may have been exposed to the attacker. The investigation is still ongoing, and the full extent is not yet known.

What measures have you taken to make sure teaching can continue?

SLU’s incident response team, together with other affected parties, is working to restore and secure functionality.

How long will this continue?

We do not know yet. Work on analysis, security and recovery is ongoing, and we are monitoring developments continuously.

Data has been leaked from the university – could sensitive information have been leaked?

The supplier's investigation is still ongoing, but so far it indicates that information such as names, email addresses, student ID numbers and messages between users may have been leaked.

How many people are affected?

The exact extent and impact are still being investigated, and we are continuing to identify which systems and functions are affected. No one with protected personal data has been affected by the incident.

What happens next?

SLU continues to work intensively on incident response, security measures and follow-up together with other affected parties and external experts. We have also reported the personal data breach to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) and the Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency (MCF). At the same time, we are keeping students and staff informed and advising everyone to be extra alert to suspicious emails or login requests.

What can I do myself?

As always, students and staff are encouraged to stay alert to phishing attempts and fraud. Be cautious if you are contacted unexpectedly, for example, by email or text message. Do not click on unknown links or share information with senders you do not know.
