Nailing of thesis – Hege Sande

Published: 08 May 2026

On Friday (May 8), Hege Sande formally nailed up her doctoral thesis “The ones that didn’t get away. Assessing recreational fisheries and biological impacts in coastal ecosystems,” at the Institute of Marine Research in Lysekil.

– This thesis would not be possible without the support of many people. Importantly, many people made the process of completing it genuinely enjoyable. Much like a child stepping off a fast-paced rollercoaster, I find I want to go again. And to quote Peter Cook, I have learned from my mistakes, and I am sure I can repeat them exactly, says Hege.

In her thesis, Hege examines how we can improve the measurement and understanding of recreational fishing and its effects on marine ecosystems.

– Recreational fishing is often seen as a small-scale activity, but in reality millions of people fish every year and together catch very large quantities of fish. In some areas, recreational fishing can remove as much fish as commercial fishing. Despite this, we know surprisingly little about how much is caught, who is fishing, and how this affects fish stocks, says Hege.
