Here you can catch up on the latest updates from SLU Aqua’s environmental group.

Evaluation of environmental targets

We have evaluated SLU Aqua's local environmental targets. You can read more about the results in the section below.

Update on environmental objectives for 2025

Environmental objectives for business travel (expired in 2023)

  • Environmental objective for international air travel: CO₂-equivalent emissions from international air travel were to be reduced by 10% between 2019 and 2023. This objective has expired, and no new objective has been established.
2025: CO₂-equivalent emissions from international air travel decreased by 25% between 2019 and 2025.

Environmental objectives for environmental monitoring and assessment (FOMA) and education

  • Increase the number of publications from SLU Aqua’s FOMA activities. All publications within the department’s FOMA activities must be registered in SLU Pub, and the number of scientific publications must increase by 1% per year, starting with the 2017 data.
2025: The objective has not been evaluated.

  • Examine at least 10 undergraduate or master’s thesis projects each year.
    2025: 18 registered degree projects.

  • Have at least 15 registered students on each of our courses.
    2025:
21 registered students in Ecology for Fish Conservation,
18 in Principles of Fisheries Science,
28 in Where Have All the Fish Gone?

  • The department should graduate an average of three PhD students per year from 2019 through 2025.
2019–2025: An average of two PhD students per year.

  • Environmental objective for communications: Achieve an average of 55 media mentions per month each year. This objective needs to be evaluated and updated.
2025: The objective has not been evaluated.

The environmental target for international air travel has expired, but we continue to monitor air travel and CO₂-equivalent emissions. Between 2019 and 2025, we reduced fossil emissions from international air travel by 25%.

SLU has had a university-wide environmental target to reduce emissions from air travel, based on the Paris Agreement. The target was:

"By 2025, SLU should reduce fossil emissions from air travel by a total of 60% compared with 2019, per full-time employee. This could correspond to a reduction of 90% for domestic flights and 50% for international flights."

The target has not been met, but emissions are decreasing. SLU as a whole has reduced emissions by 37% (74% for domestic flights and 28% for international flights). Between 2019 and 2025, emissions decreased by 29% at the NJ Faculty and 28% at SLU Aqua.

At SLU Aqua, we will review our environmental targets to update and improve them. SLU is also working on renewing its overall environmental targets, including the target for travel.

Car rental

We encourage everyone renting a car to choose an environmentally friendly vehicle, preferably an electric car, when making a booking.

Internal audit

The internal auditors have audited SLU Aqua in Ultuna and will also audit the office in Simpevarp (remotely). More information about the 2026 internal audits will be shared later this autumn.

Information from previous audits is available here.

Waste bins

As at SLU as a whole, SLU Aqua no longer has waste bins in individual offices. This reduces our environmental impact by eliminating the use of plastic bags that are replaced every week. It also makes cleaning easier.

This means that all waste other than paper must be sorted in kitchens and other areas where waste bins are available.

SLU Aqua's local environmental procedures

In addition to SLU's procedures, SLU Aqua has local procedures for emergency preparedness, waste management and chemical management. These procedures are currently being updated and are available here.

Management has decided to remove the previous local procedures for business travel and the catering policy. These are being replaced by SLU's procedures, which are considered comprehensive.

Environmental and sustainability work at SLU Aqua

The Department of Aquatic Resources works systematically in favour of the environment. We make continuous efforts to reduce the department's negative environmental impact by setting environmental goals and making improvement measures. The work is carried out by employees, the environmental coordinator, environmental representatives and Aqua's management.
