Latest News from the Environmental Group at SLU Aqua – June 2025

Published: 25 June 2025

Here you can catch up on the latest updates from SLU Aqua’s environmental group.

New electric motors for Lysekil and Öregrund

Electric motors have been purchased for smaller boats in Lysekil and Öregrund. The funding came from the Climate Fund.

External environmental audit of SLU Aqua’s environmental work

In February, an external environmental audit was conducted of SLU's and SLU Aqua's environmental efforts and environmental management system. As usual, the auditors had many positive comments, highlighting environmentally conscious and committed staff, SLU’s environmentally focused operations, and the work related to Agenda 2030. SLU Aqua’s work with the Fish Barometer received special recognition.

For the NJ Faculty, the audit resulted in two non-conformities and three suggestions for improvement.

Relevant points for SLU Aqua include:

  • Hazardous waste containers must from now on be labeled with sender information (name and phone number).
  • Measurement and monitoring of environmental impact from SLU Aqua’s operations should be communicated to the respective unit managements. The environmental group is working on how to improve information sharing and communication.
  • Environmental risk assessments need to be clarified and documented. We in the environmental group would like to encourage everyone to consider environmental risks when starting new projects and during fieldwork. Environmental risks during fieldwork should be handled in the same way as occupational health and safety risks. There is a document in SLU's Environmental Handbook, which outlines the measures to be taken and the types of environmental risks that may arise. The document refers to several routines in the Environmental Handbook, including those for chemical use and waste management. A Risk Assessment for Fieldwork is also available in the IA system. This risk assessment applies across SLU and covers both environmental and occupational health and safety risks.

Environmental and sustainability work at SLU Aqua

The Department of Aquatic Resources works systematically in favour of the environment. We make continuous efforts to reduce the department's negative environmental impact by setting environmental goals and making improvement measures. The work is carried out by employees, the environmental coordinator, environmental representatives and Aqua's management.
