From the beginning of 2026, the Ship Management Unit will be organisationally placed within the NJ Faculty. The decision will give the research vessel Svea a clearer connection to the university’s activities in marine research and environmental monitoring and assessment.

The decision is based on a review commissioned by the Vice-Chancellor to assess the potential benefits of a new organisational placement for the Ship Management Unit. The review also examined risks and implications for staff, finances, and the environment, as well as any necessary changes to SLU’s governing documents.

The results show clear advantages to placing the Ship Management Unit within the NJ Faculty.

– The research vessel Svea is used for marine research and environmental monitoring and assessment, and has a strong link to the NJ Faculty’s work, particularly within the Departments of Aquatic Resources and of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, says Pär Aronsson, Head of Faculty Administration at the NJ Faculty.

With this new placement, the Ship Management Unit will be managed in the same way as other major infrastructures at SLU, such as the SLU University Animal Hospital. The move is expected to improve the conditions for management, development, and collaboration in marine research and environmental monitoring and assessment.

Currently, the Ship Management Unit belongs to the Division of Planning and Research Support. From 1 January 2026, it will become part of the NJ Faculty.
