Every three years, it's time for the faculty board elections, and next year marks the cycle again. This time, members of the Board of Education will also be appointed. But leading the charge are the nominations for the nomination committees.
The faculties’ nomination committees play a pivotal role in SLU's development, both at the faculty level and the overarching SLU level. Apart from suggesting members for respective faculty boards, the chairs and vice-chairs of the nomination committees constitute an SLU-wide nomination committee. This committee, in turn, recommends members for the Board of Education and manages the election of three teachers/researchers to the SLU board. Therefore, the composition of these committees holds significant importance for SLU. Using your vote and engaging in the election is not just a right but a significant opportunity to influence.
Within the faculty boards, decisions are made regarding subject areas, recruitment for higher academic positions, and the allocation of financial resources. These boards also hold the overarching responsibility for the quality of research and teaching within the faculty. The Board of Education, in turn, handles crucial tasks related to strategic issues concerning the collective educational offerings, the quality of education, resource allocation, and many other central matters concerning education.
"Universities are unique organizations. We govern and lead through a combination of line decisions and collegial decisions. By nominating and voting for colleagues you trust, you become a crucial part of continually strengthening our collegial culture, where boards and committees make vital strategic and operational decisions. So, I hope you take your academic responsibility and contribute," says Mia Knutson Wedel, the vice-chancellor of SLU.
The nomination process for the nomination committees has now commenced, and all those eligible to vote have received or will receive information from their respective faculties detailing how to participate in the process.
