After two years' pause due to the pandemic, it was finally time for the new honorary doctors to be celebrated at SLU. Madeleine held an interesting lecture about the importance of communication in research for global food security and sanitation. "Communication is sharing", Madeleines words about what kind of difference communication can make in research as well as society gave the audience new thoughtful perspectives on one part in a complex system to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. With joint vision and a good structure as well as plans about the goal and target group, the communication is an essential tool to achieve changes.

Some take-aways from Madeleine's lecture:

  • Internet is both your best friend and your enemy
  • It is important that translation is working well to minimise risk for wrong information
  • Adapt - tool and means for your communication

Shakuntala Thilstedt

Shakuntala inspired the audience talking about how aquatic foods work as superfoods to help poor and malnourished people in low- and middle income countries. She emphasised the importance of including women and youth in aquatic food systems and make it a matter for national and state policies. In this way, with improved diversity in the whole production chain, aquatic foods can act as superfoods.

Action points from Shakuntala's lecture:

  • We must recognize the crucial role of aquatic foods in transformation towards sustainable, nutritious and equitable food systems
  • We must amplify investments in research innovations and scaling of aquatic food solutions at households, national, regional, and global levels
  • We must empower champions through capacity building, knowledge sharing and bridging digital divides to advance transformation in aquatic food systems
