Uppsala and Lund to cancel Valborg celebrations

Published: 25 January 2021

The traditional Valborg celebrations in Uppsala and Lund will be cancelled again this year. The current coronavirus situation is serious and is expected to be this way even at the end of April.

Given the current circumstances, there is no way a gathering of over 150,000 people in central Uppsala on 30 April can be justified. Therefore, activities that could lead to major crowds forming will be cancelled.

SLU, Uppsala University, Uppsala Municipality, Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala County, Destination Uppsala and the police all support this decision.

Activities being cancelled include:

  • Running the Falls
  • Activities in Ekonomikumparken
  • Herring lunch at Uppsala Concert & Congress
  • Donning of the Caps outside Carolina Rediviva

Lund Municipality has also reported that for safety reasons they will be cancelling the Valborg celebrations usually held in Lund’s City Park. Work to find alternative solutions is ongoing between the municipality, police, universities and student organisations.
