Granted funding from the SLU Climate Fund

Published: 30 November 2018

It’s official – new projects have now been selected for funding from the SLU Climate Fund!

This year, a total of 14 projects were selected:

  • Purchase of electric car (Mats Pehrsson, Lövsta)
Justification: The project involves a substantial reduction of carbon dioxide and the opportunity to be seen at and between Campus Ultuna and the Swedish Livestock Research Centre at Lövsta, making a considerable contribution to strengthening the SLU brand both internally and externally as well as vis-à-vis students.

  • Purchase of electric compact loader (Mats Pehrsson, Lövsta)
Justification: A cost-efficient and commendable initiative resulting in a significant reduction of carbon dioxide per krona. In addition, reduced noise levels will contribute to a more positive work environment for both people and animals.

  • Study trip to visit industries/universities/research institutes that in different ways work with biomass systems (Torun Hammar, Department of Energy and Technology, Ultuna)
Justification: Using limited means, the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and over time contribute to a more substantial change in behaviour. The project is granted funding provided that the vice-chancellor does not decide to fund train travel centrally during the same period.

  • Investigate the possibility to reduce consumption of disposable products or choosing products with a lower climate impact but that still meet the care hygiene requirements (Elinora Johansson, Department of Clinical Sciences, Ultuna)
Justification: A clearly defined project with the potential for large uptake among staff and students using limited means. In addition, the project strengthens the SLU brand vis-à-vis students.

  • Installation of two charging points for electric cars (Frida Sundqvist, Department of Aquatic Resources)
Justification: A relatively simple measure that makes it easier to use environmentally friendly transport.

  • Purchase of electric cargo bike (Helena Bötker, Ultuna)
Justification: A project that benefits the environment as well as health of a large group of people while at the same time contributing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the project strengthens the SLU brand at the location.

  • Innovative strategy for a cost-effective and sustainable year-round vegetable production system reducing transport emissions and food miles (Most Tahera Naznin, Alnarp)
Justification: The strong science and research aspects of this project could lead to impact on a bigger scale. The project is granted funding subject to a clarification of how the project will be managed long-term as well as where it will be housed.

  • Purchase of two electric bikes, of which one a cargo bike (Mikael Lundbäck, Umeå)
Justification: A project that benefits the environment as well as health of a large group of people while at the same time contributing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the project strengthens the SLU brand at the location. If the bikes are intended for private use, the aspect of tax on fringe benefits must be considered (applies to all locations granted funding for bikes).

  • Purchase of electric cargo bike (Johanna Wallsten, Umeå)
Justification: A project that benefits the environment as well as the health of a large group of people while at the same time contributing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the project strengthens the SLU brand at the location. If the bikes are intended for private use, the aspect of tax on fringe benefits must be considered (applies to all locations granted funding for bikes).

  • Arrange "bike maintenance week" when students and staff are offered basic servicing of bikes at no charge (Karin Bäckman, Ultuna)
Justification: A project that benefits the environment as well as the health of a large group of students and staff. In addition, the project strengthens the SLU brand at the location.

  • Purchase and installation of 3 charging stations where users can ride a bike to generate electricity, e.g. to charge a phone or laptop (Daniel Albertsson, SLU Library, Alnarp, Ultuna and Umeå)
Justification: An innovative project that in the long run can lead to increased awareness among students and staff. In addition, the project strengthens the SLU brand as it will be visible on several campuses.

  • Switch to LED lights in greenhouses (Per Lindén, Biocentre, Ultuna)
Justification: A project with clear connections to our operations as well as our climate efforts. The project may concern both students and staff.

  • Replacing a conventional toilet with a urine-diverting flush toilet (Björn Vinnerås, Department of Energy and Technology, Ultuna)
Justification: An innovative project with a clear climate connection. The project is granted funding subject to a clarification of how residues such as medical products will be handled.

  • Establish a permanent bicycle workshop at the Ultuna campus (Daniel Valentini, Department of Urban and Rural Development, Ultuna)
Justification: An innovative project that concerns both health and the environment and is targeted at a majority of students and staff. The project is granted funding subject to a clarification of how the project will be managed long-term.
