Published: 31 March 2017

From 1 April 2017, is appointing a new head of the Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) . Noél Holmgren is a professor in theoretical ecology, and most recently worked at University of Skövde.

Welcome to SLU Aqua! How does it feel?

- It's really exciting! I can´t think of any other department that I would rather work at. We are dealing with issues that are extremely important for society, and there are many, not just me, who are interested in fishing and the aquatic environment, says Noél Holmgren, who´s own research concerns sustainable fisheries management from an ecosystem perspective, focusing on the Baltic Sea.

Noél Holmgren has an extensive leadership experience, which he believes will be of good use in his new role. He has been Head of Department for two periods and Pro Vice-Chancellor for education at University of Skövde, and as University Director at Blekinge Institute of Technology.

What is your most important task as head of the department?

- It is the employees that fill the organization with content and make things happen. I want to create the best conditions for them to do a world class job. It may involve, for example ensuring that the support systems and procedures needed are in place.

The Department's vision is viable fish stocks in healthy waters. What´s needed to get there?

- It is extremely important that we produce high quality work, and strive to continually improve. We are already well represented internationally, but we need to keep working. We should be at the forefront, both in terms of research, environmental monitoring and education.
