Dean letter from Lena Lidfors

Published: 17 November 2017

We have recently switched to winter time and it is getting frost in the mornings. Days get shorter and we light up more candles. It is then good to go out and take a walk in the middle of the day to load the body with a little extra light. The world has suffered from "Me too" and a number of investigations have been launched even in Sweden. We have attended a quality dialogue on postgraduate education and there will be a number of dissertations until Christmas.

Lena Lidfors, Professor at the Department of Animal Environment and Health is Vice Dean at the Faculty of veterinary medicin and animal sciences, responsible for doctoral education and equal opportunities.

A world class doctoral education - how do we get there?

On November 23 at 9-12 for the entire SLU and at 13-15 for the VH and NJ faculties, a seminar will be held on the quality, stress and career development of postgraduate education. The morning program is held at Ultuna and is aimed at all supervisors and doctoral students at SLU with video link to Alnarp, Umeå and Skara. Gab van Winkel from Wageningen University in the Netherlands has been invited to describe how they work with quality assurance of doctoral theses at their university. Two PhD student-supervisor pairs will tell you how they have put up their tutorial. Jan Hultgren asks how we look at a thesis defence and the participants get to group work around three questions before lunch.

The afternoon program is organized by the VH Faculty and the NJ Faculty together and held in the Loftet grand hall. Gab van Winkel tells us how they work to reduce stress in their PhD students. Monica Östman tells about career development through Focus and the County Health (Länshälsan) is participating and talking about stress and how they can help.

Research days at the VH Faculty

On December 12 at 13-17 the VH faculty organizes research seminar on research quality. The Vice Chancellor participates and talks about his view on good science. The Scientific Council for Animal Welfare is presented. The afternoon ends with glögg and mingle. Book the date and look out for the invitation with more details about the afternoon.

On February 8, the VH faculty research day will be held with a subsequent staff party. Exciting lectures from some of the faculty researchers will be held. Poster exhibition of research studies made by our PhD students with subsequent award ceremony. Debate around a central area is promised. Presentation of SLU Future Animals, Nature and Health will be included. Book the day already, more information will be sent out later.

Video connection will be arranged for those who cannot participate in Ultuna. The faculty pays the trip for those who come from other SLU campuses. We are looking forward to that all faculty employees take the opportunity to learn more about what we are doing in veterinary medicine and animal science and meet colleagues at the other Departments.

The Postgraduate education

Director of Studies for Postgraduate Studies Jan Hultgren has reviewed the website of the VH Faculty and our administrator Fredrik Granberg has made some changes to make it easier and more logical to find information and forms. If you find something that would need to be clarified further, you can e-mail to fun-vh@slu.se

The Research Council (FUR) has due to a suggestion from FUN prepared a proposal for what may extend the postgraduate education. It has been an important work for PhD students who have experienced a need for clarification for both supervisors and departments. The contact person at the departments will get information about this after next meeting in FUR and disseminate it to all supervisors and doctoral students.

Equal Opportunities

The Equal Opportunities Committee has a meeting on September 13 and November 8 this autumn. Minutes from the meetings are provided and can be obtained from the contact person at each department. Do you know who your contact person is?

We plan to organize an evening seminar on HBTQ issues with the student unions and the doctoral student council. The plans for this have just begun so the seminar will probably be held in the beginning of next year.

The 6th of December at 14-16, the theater performance "Scandal" of Besatt Theater in Aulan at Ultuna is given. The NJ Faculty's Equal Opportunity Committee invites all students and employees at SLU to this performance. No prior registration is needed.

On 23-24 November, the National Equal Opportunities Conference for Universities and Colleges will be held at Södertörn University. Success, struggle and conflict are the themes for this year´s conference. There are probably some students from ULS and VMF participating.

Have you seen or heard something that you think we should know in the Equal Opportunities Committee or would you like to suggest activities we should arrange, you could contact Lena Lidfors, Bercem Johannesson at the VH-office, Maja Malmberg at BVF or your contact person at the department.
