Mia Hedlund

Mia Hedlund
Veterinarian and PhD student at the Department of Animal Biosciences (HBIO). My research is on the development of new cancer treatments in dogs and humans.

Presentation

I graduated from the veterinary medicine programme at SLU in January 2021. After that I worked as a small animal veterinarian in Stockholm for about two and a half years. I’m back at SLU since September 2023 as a PhD student at the Department of Animal Biosciences (HBIO).

My PhD project focuses on the use of privately owned companion dogs with spontaneous cancer, instead of the more historically used research dogs, in the development of new immunotherapies to treat cancer in both dogs and humans. We work with a type of celles called CAR-T cells that are genetically modified to detect and attack the surface protein HER-2 that are expressed on several types of cancer cells.
