Gustav Berry

Gustav Berry
I am a researcher with a broad interest in modern agrarian and rural history. My work is concentrated on social and cultural aspects of rural and agrarian change in twentieth century Sweden. I am interested in how rural and agrarian actors viewed, reacted and adapted to processes and phenomena such as rural flight, industrial modernity, the heritagisation of rural culture and the formation of the Swedish welfare state.

Teaching

I am director of a first cycle course on landscape and garden history for students in the landscape architecture and landscape engineering programs. I also teach on themes related to my research on modern agrarian and rural history on various courses.

Research

My main research project concerns the publishing activities of the Swedish farmers' movement 1920-1970. Through studies of agrarian press and literary fiction in the form of farmer novels, the project explores how printed media was used to mitigate a period of intense agrarian change.

Background

I have a backround in the history of education. I hold a phd in sociology of education from Uppsala university. My thesis explored the rationale of rural domestic education in Sweden in the age of high modernity and showed how schooling and extension in rural domesticity was directly related to real and imagined problems of womens' flight from the land.
