Educational lunch seminar: The teacher as an assessor – challenges and solutions in context

All teacher and education-related staff are invited to this educational seminar on “The teacher as an assessor: challenges and solutions in context”.

  • Language: English

Higher education instructors are expert in their own domains, however, they usually have little training in methods of designing, analysing, and reporting assessment. From the instructor perspective, assessment sits in a space bounded by

  1. the desire to help students learn (formative assessment)
  2. the need to judge or evaluate the quality of their learning (summative assessment),
  3. the temptation to treat assessment as irrelevant and ignorable.

This space is subject to regulatory controls, GenAI/LLM possibilities, digital administration, and threats to integrity. In this talk, the presenter will draw on his cross-cultural research with teachers to examine what can be done to ensure assessment is valid, reliable, and educational.

Professor Gavin T L Brown, PhD (the University of Auckland) holds honorary positions at the Education University of Hong Kong and Thammasat University, Thailand and is a guest researcher in the Department of Science and Mathematics Education, Umeå University.
