Abstract

Climate change will alter the boundary conditions for agricultural soils in higher latitudes. Therefore, the understanding of climate-driven soil processes and forces acting on the structure of these soils is crucial to project future soil structural dynamics, potential tipping points and implications for water management. I present a newly developed method to quantify soil structure, which will be used to investigate links between soil structure and climate on the regional scale. Furthermore, I will introduce an experimental protocol for investigating the effects of different freeze-thaw patterns, which represent potential future climate scenarios for Central Sweden, on the soil pore space and water functions. This includes first draft findings. I finish with an outlook on my ongoing and future research work.
