Aliens in space and time

seminars, workshops |

Ester Polaina at Department of Ecology will talk about challenges to predict the distribution and expansion of invasive terrestrial vertebrates in Europe.

More information about the seminar

Considering the current context of global change, actions aiming to ensure the conservation of natural systems require a better understanding of the main threats to biodiversity. Invasive species are one of the top threats to biodiversity worldwide, and their impact on native biodiversity can synergistically interact with other major menaces such as climate and land-use change.

Among alien species, invasive terrestrial vertebrates (ITV) are quite underrepresented in the literature; however, Europe hosts 15 of the most harmful ITV species, whose current distribution and potential expansion areas remain largely unknown. Our research aims to close this gap by estimating the current and future distribution of ITV in Europe.
