Microsoft Windows Update

Last changed: 31 March 2025

Microsoft will stop providing security updates for Windows 10 in 2025. What does this mean for SLU?

October 14, 2025 marks an important date for Windows 10 users, when Microsoft officially ends the delivery of security updates for the operating system. For SLU's network users, this means that Windows 10 will soon pose a significant security risk and can therefore no longer be used on the network.

Upgrading to Windows 11 – practical implications

To continue using computers on SLU's network, users must upgrade to Windows 11. It is important to note that Microsoft has tightened the system requirements for the new operating system, which means that some older computers will not be able to handle the upgrade and must be replaced.

How can I check which version I have?

Type winver in the search box to the right of the start button and an information window will pop up clearly showing which version you have.

How do I check if my computer is compatible?

Laptop users who follow the IT department's recommended range can expect computers from 2018 onwards to be compatible for upgrading. This means models of the HP Elitebook series from generation 5 (G5) to the latest version (G11). Additionally, users can download Microsoft's testing tool to check if their device meets Windows 11's system requirements. If problems arise, it is recommended to contact the IT department's service desk or an IT coordinator for guidance.

Upcoming steps

For those who receive IT support from the IT department, the following applies:

  • New computers will come with Windows 11 pre-installed.

  • Computers submitted for reinstallation will be upgraded to Windows 11, if possible. Otherwise, a dialogue will be initiated to find a solution.

  • Windows 11 will be available in the application "Software Center" on your computer so you can upgrade at your convenience.  This is the best way for you to decide yourself when to upgrade to Windows 11. If you choose this option, it must be done before the 5th of May 2025

  • Beginning the 5th of May 2025, the IT department will start distributing Windows 11 automatically to computers still running Windows 10. However, users will be able to delay the installation for up to a 24 hours.  If you need to delay the installation longer then 24 hours, contact the IT-servicedesk before the 5th of May.
