FAQ
What is Software Center?
Software Center is an Application (app) on your computer. It is found under the Start menu.
Can Software Center determine if my computer is compatible with Windows 11?
Yes, the system runs a compatibility test before upgrading. There is also a link above to a testing tool.
Will my files be affected?
No, your files will still be there after the upgrade.
Will my programs work in Windows 11?
Even though it is not possible to guarantee it, the basic principle is that programs that work with Windows 10, most likely also work with Windows 11.
What do I do if my computer can not be upgraded to Windows 11?
If this case, the computer must be replaced with a computer which is compatible, since it is a security risk to continue using Windows 10 in SLU:s network.
I have a computer (for example: connected to lab equipment) and can not upgrade before October 2025. What do I do then?
(new info Oct. 2025)
Microsoft offers prolonged support (Extended Support Updates or ESU) during a limited time. The following applies during the first year of ESU:
- Time period: The first year of ESU is from the 14th of October 2025 until the 13th of October 2026.
- Cost: The price för the first year of ESU is 13 kr/computer/year.
- Requirements for computers to apply for ESU:
- The computer must have Windows 10 version 22H2, incl. update KB5046613.
- The computer must be in SLU's Active Directory.
- The computer must be able to receive security updates from Microsoft via the network.
- How can I apply for ESU? There is an application form in the Self-service Portal in Topdesk. The application should include a motivation for why the computer couldn't be updated to Windows 11 by the 14th of October 2025.
- When are ESU updates delivered? The first security updates will be delivered on the next "Patch Tuesday", that is, the 11th of November.
Preparation for this transition to Windows 11 is important for SLU:s operations to continue in a safe manner. Everyone is therefore encouraged to act in plenty of time before risk of interruption occurs.
