The Institute of Marine Research hosted this year’s meeting of RCG NANSEA and RCG Baltic

From 10 to 13 June, representatives from the Regional Coordination Groups RCG NANSEA and RCG Baltic gathered at the Institute of Marine Research in Lysekil. These groups are part of the regional coordination structure under the EU's Data Collection Framework (DCF) for fisheries and meet annually. This year, it was Sweden’s turn to host the meeting.
The aim of the meeting is to coordinate and develop various aspects of data collection based on “end-user needs.” The agreements reached are documented, among other things, in the Regional Work Plans developed within the groups. The current programme period runs from 2025 to 2027.
Around 50 participants from 14 countries, as well as representatives from the European Commission and ICES, attended the meeting in Lysekil. SLU Aqua was well represented throughout the four-day event, with participants from all divisions.
– It was a very successful week from many perspectives. Our premises were used for a major meeting for the first time since the inauguration last autumn, and they proved to work extremely well in terms of sound and video connections, partitioning for group work, and on top of that, Lysekil offered perfect weather. Presentations combined with group sessions and discussions on new challenges in data collection made the meeting both engaging and productive, says Maria Hansson, Deputy Head of Divisoin at the Institute of Marine Research.
Overall, participants were very pleased with the event. One attendee commented:
– Thank you very much for the warm welcome to Lysekil and the excellent organisation. It was a pleasure to be there and to reconnect with everyone in such a fantastic setting.
More about RCG NANSEA and RCG Baltic
The management of marine resources in the EU relies on reliable and comparable data. Since fish stocks often span across the waters of multiple countries, coordination is essential to avoid overlaps, gaps, or inconsistencies in data collection. The coordination groups RCG NANSEA (Regional Coordination Group for the North Atlantic, North Sea & Eastern Arctic) and RCG Baltic (Regional Coordination Group for the Baltic) bring together experts and representatives from EU countries fishing in the Northeast Atlantic (including the North Sea), the Baltic Sea, and the Eastern Arctic. Their aim is to coordinate and improve fisheries data collection in these sea areas, and to develop common strategies and methods for monitoring and data collection.
