Flipping the future? Innovative e-learning and flipped classroom training at SLU for Ukrainian Universities

From January 20th to 24th, 2025, eight teachers from four Ukrainian universities participated in the Teaching Active E-Learning (TAEL) training at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The course was part of the international project LEARNSAVE: Learning Under Attack – Sustainable Education Under Threat in Ukrainian Universities (Svenska institutet project No. 01236/2023) and focused on high-quality flipped classroom teaching in a digital learning environment.
The course offered an engaging blend of theory and practical strategies for modernizing education, including e-learning design strategies, digital tools and systems for online teaching, and digital assessment methods. Expertly led by Minha Park and Alexandra D’Urso, the sessions provided valuable insights into creating engaging and effective e-learning experiences. Participants also explored how to design inclusive and accessible online learning environments.
Cecilia Almlöv shared insights into the grading system at SLU, while Claes Hellberg introduced various learning platforms. Malte Rödl demonstrated how to integrate AI and innovative pedagogy into teaching practices. The participants also had the opportunity to meet Roger Pettersson, the Head of the Division of Learning and Digitalisation, which is responsible for pedagogical development and digital support for education at SLU.
Guided by Markus Miljand and Emil Söderberg, the participants recorded their own educational videos, which will later be used to support student learning in Ukraine.
“The training was intensive, with many different experts sharing practical insights and essential skills for successfully adopting the flipped classroom approach. This methodology is quite new for us, as it’s not traditionally used in Ukrainian universities. I hope we can continue to deepen our knowledge and create educational courses using this innovative approach,” said Olesia Priss from Tavria State Agrotechnological University.
“The training at SLU was extremely interesting and valuable for educators from all universities, as it provided essential experience in using interactive teaching methods, integrating AI in education, and developing e-courses, all of which will contribute to enhancing the educational process and improving the quality of education,” added Mykhailo Matvieiev and Taras Yakubec from the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine.
“It was an inspiring and collaborative journey to empower educators with innovative e-learning strategies!” said Minha Park from SLU.
“The passion and dedication of Ukrainian educators were truly remarkable. Witnessing their commitment to improving education despite challenging circumstances was deeply inspiring,” highlighted Saeid Karkehabadi from SLU.
“This experience reminded me of the power of education to bridge distances and overcome barriers. We learned from each other and built connections,” confirmed Alexandra D’Urso from SLU.
“We look forward to future collaborations that will not only foster innovative educational practices but also advance research for a sustainable future,” emphasized Galia Zamaratskaia, the project coordinator and grant holder.
Together, we’ve taken important steps toward transforming education!
