The 2025 SLU Alumnus of the year, Åsa Domeij, has now been honoured during an award ceremony at Ultuna.
The event featured mingling, a summary of her life’s work, and a panel discussion on her key areas of interest: sustainability within the food industry.
"Being named Alumnus of the year truly came as a surprise! I feel very honoured to have been chosen, not least because SLU means so much to me," said former agronomy student Åsa Domeij.
She has a background that includes serving as a Member of Parliament for the Green Party and as Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Agriculture.
"Being selected as SLU Alumnus of the year requires exceptional dedication and a clear commitment to making a positive difference. Åsa Domeij truly exemplifies this through her deep engagement in efforts to make our world a more sustainable and better place," said Vice-Rector Annsofie Wahlström.
Åsa Domeij received the award during a ceremony at Ultuna. The event began with mingling among invited guests, followed by the award presentation and a panel discussion. The discussion focused on the challenges faced by the grocery trade in balancing profitability with sustainability. Participants included Jenny Hagberg (SLU alumna and Head of Sustainability at the Swedish Grocery Trade Association), agronomy student David Hansson, and Beatrice Tillgren (SLU alumna and Quality Assurance Specialist at Lidl).
The discussion highlighted that there are many aspects to consider as a consumer interested in sustainability. The panel pointed out that factors such as visibility and labelling in stores can make it easier for customers to make good choices. Consumers also tend to be conservative, which can make it difficult to introduce new products.
