At the last Faculty Board meeting, the head of the National Center for Animal Welfare Lotta Berg was invited to give a status report. Here is Lotta's report on SCAW.
SLU National Center for Animal Welfare, SCAW, has now been around for over 10 years. The center has four employees and works with issues of concerning animal welfare, primarily vis-à-vis various administrative authorities, including the judiciary, as well as universities and colleges and other expert organizations.
During the past year, SCAW, in accordance with a recent investigation, has focused more on farm animals, although the center still addresses issues for all animal species.
SCAW is the national contact for animal welfare at slaughter, and supports both authorities and companies. A lot of time is also spent answering questions from the control authorities about principally important animal welfare cases and answering referrals. SCAW has organized a number of courses and seminars in the field of animal welfare during the past year, in some cases together with SLU's Future One Health platform.
SCAW is becoming increasingly strong in the international field. This involves both Nordic-Baltic co-operation with other corresponding center formations (NordCAW) and various constellations at European level (EuroFAWC) and globally within OIE, the World Organization for Animal Health.
It is really worth mentioning that during the year, the consortium, of which SCAW is a member, was designated by the European Commission as the European reference center for ruminants and equine animal protection (EURCAW), an activity that is now being set up.
