Parking fee investigation complete
As the Environment Unit previously stated in a previous newsletter (see below), SLU student Filip Jankulovski wrote a Master's dissertation investigating whether parking fees should be introduced on SLU campuses. The conclusion was that there will be no parking fees. The dissertation is now finished and available via the links at the bottom of the page.
Investigation on whether to introduce parking fees on more campuses than Umeå
For some time, the Environment Unit has received several improvement proposals on introducing parking fees on all campuses. The argument was that free parking does not strengthen SLU's environmental profile. During the spring of 2018, Filip Jankulovski wrote a Master's dissertation which investigated how SLU should act. Among other things, he used three focus groups and a survey that was sent to all affected parties. The survey response was great. Filip reported the results to the Infrastructure Group (ISG). Based on those results, the ISG made the following decision:
The ISG believe that Filip Jankulovski has performed his assignment very well and the issue has drawn great interest and commitment. It is also valuable to review numbers which confirm the general opinion on the issue, which is that parking fees are very negative. However, when campuses develop, it can result in renewed possibilities. Until then, the ISG is assigning the Environment Unit to discuss positive incentives to increase the use of bikes, buses and trains. In principle, this aspect is already included in ongoing environmental work, e.g. in the form of bike activities and roof racks as well as "prova på" (using UL for free in Uppsala).
