Hyung Sik Choi joins the Department of Economics

Published: 11 May 2018

During the fall of 2017 Hyung Sik joined tha Applied Analysis Group at the department. To get to know him a bit better we took the opportunity to interview him.

How come you applied for a position at the department of economics?

I was looking for a position related to economic modeling where my expertise lies and my former project was about to end last year. I found this position related to CAPRI (Common Agricultural Policy Regionalised Impact modelling System). And I decided to apply for this position because CAPRI is a well-known model for agricultural policy impact assessments in the EU and I wanted to extend my modelling experience via CAPRI.

Who will you be working with and what projects will you be involved in?

I joined a CAPRI team in applied analysis group at SLU where Torbjörn leads and Ida, Lisa worked together in the group.

Now, I am working on Brexit impact assessments on European agriculture, using CAPRI and am also involved in an EU project – SUPREMA (Support For Policy Relevant Modelling of Agriculture). I will look into how to govern large modelling systems for policy assessment.

Anything else interesting that you want to add about yourself?

I actually come from a different discipline. I studied engineering for my bachelor and master in Korea and came to Europe for my PhD. I had interests in environmental policy and bioenergy and I found a PhD position in Germany. And my PhD work was interdisciplinary and developed a bioeconomic model for climate change impact assessment. Since my PhD, I have worked with economists and I enjoy my interdisciplinary work.
